You can pray, "Jesus, love me," and know that he
already does.
Believe it or not, in 1992, Whitney Houston sung a version of
the well known song, the old hymn, Jesus Loves Me. But who cares-
if you're asking the question, "Does Jesus love me?"
then a song like that could seem really dumb. It goes...
"Yes, Jesus loves me
For the Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me,
This I know
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak but He is strong."
I'd assume that you don't have any trouble with the reality or
historicity of Jesus, if you're asking "Does Jesus love me?"
Why would you care, if he didn't exist? And if he's not the son
of God, risen to Heaven, he'd be totally dead and unable to love
anyone.
So the question, "Does Jesus love me?" really comes
down to a matter of two things: Christian doctrine, and your baggage.
Doctrinally speaking, we can say this:
- "God so loved the world that he sent his only
son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have
eternal life." (John 3:16) An important
point to understand is that God is three people (Father, Son,
Holy Spirit) with one nature (God). It's a brain twister, but
it's true.
- From the suffering of the cross, he forgave the Pharisees
who sent him there, "Father, forgive them, for they
know not what they are doing," (Luke 23:33)
- Paul, who wrote about half of the New Testament, said this,
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly
loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,
gentleness and patience," (Col 3:12), and, "from the
beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying
work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth." (2
Thes 2:13)
Now, if God loved the world, which includes you (God's
beyond time), and he created you and all humanity, and as the
Son, He went to the cross for you, and he forgave those who sent
him to be murdered, and he calls you chosen, saved, and sanctified
(made sacred), then how could you ask, "Does Jesus love me?"
Y
If you believe he is God, repent (regret and turn away from sin),
and accept him as your Lord, then it's clear that Jesus loves
you. You are made in His image, forgiven, chosen, saved, and
sanctified by a Lord who loves you.
You baggage is the only remaining thing that could make you ask,
"Does Jesus love me?" - If you had a childhood where
you didn't feel safe, protected, secure- if you were molested
or abused, even verbally abused, you may need counseling. In extreme
cases, trained professionals are best equipped to deal with helping
you recover. I would suggest a Christian counselor, or in the
more mild cases, your pastor or minister.
And remember that the sword of the Spirit, with which
you can attack the doubts that come from Satan, is the Bible.
Read it! Then you will be able to pray, "Jesus love me,"
and know that he already does.
